Johann teaches Dharma and Insight Meditation using contemporary language. He has been meditating since 1974 and was asked to begin teaching in 2008. His primary teachers are Shinzen Young, Eric Kolvig, and Adyashanti. He is the director of Rocky Mountain Ecodharma Retreat Center and teaches there frequently.

Gratitude, Connection, and Healing in Nature (Zoom)

Weekend Nature Meditation Retreat Friday June 5, 6–8pm MDT Saturday June 6, 9am-7pm Sunday June 7, 9am-1pm This is a fully guided and supported meditation retreat in nature, facilitated through Zoom. All are welcome, including newcomers to meditation. As we shelter in place, connection with dharma practice, nature and community is critically important to our wellbeing*. This retreat is an opportunity to explore and nourish together on a spring weekend, outdoors. Themes will include meditation in nature, gratitude, joy, interdependence, and how being with nature soothes fear and vulnerability. You can do this retreat from your home and neighborhood, walking nearby, looking out a window, porch or balcony; or going to a park or natural area with a smartphone. The retreat will include structured sitting and walking practice in nature, meditation instruction and guidance, and small group breakout sessions with the teachers for questions, discussion and sharing. Full support and instruction will be available for beginners. We will encourage a quiet, silent retreat container as much as possible in your home setting, including staying away from work, email, phone and media, and limiting interactions with others. Summer Solstice Nature Retreat

This is a new configuration of the retreat, including camping and commuting options, designed for deep nature practice while staying safe. The Buddha lived and taught outdoors, and most of the traditions of Buddhism were developed in nature. Mindfulness and silence deepen our experience of nature and beauty, while intimacy with plants, animals, and the elements enhance our sense of oneness. On the longest days of the year, join us to hike, meditate, and experience the dharma unfolding naturally. This silent meditation retreat is for anyone with a desire to go deeper in their practice, from beginners to experienced meditators. The retreat will include instructions in sitting and walking (hiking) meditation, dharma talks, and practice discussions with the teachers. How does modern dharma help us understand and engage with all of this? New teachings and practices are now emerging in response to the realities of the current situation: ecodharma. This is a ten-day experiential immersion into ecodharma, specifically for dharma teachers, dharma leaders, and committed practitioners. Our sense of separation from nature is at the root of the ecological crises our civilization faces, and ecodharma is a path of deconstructing that separation, reuniting our inner nature with outer nature. Ecodharma practice is about healing our relationship with the rest of the natural world, so that an appropriate and authentic response can arise, which unifies our personal and spiritual transformation with social engagement. Inner and Outer Nature Silent Meditation Weekend Retreat, August 6-9 This retreat is open to everyone, including beginners. The focus is on silent nature practice, immersion in the natural world, connecting our inner nature with outer nature, and dissolving separation. Each day includes plentiful time for sitting, hiking/walking meditation, as well as nature meditation instruction, dharma talks, and individual and group practice discussions. The overall intention is for deep silence, practice, and connection with nature, and then integrating that into one’s life. Spiritual practice will be supported by instruction in a variety of nature meditations. There will be nightly dharma talks, exploring how being-in-nature can be an important part of our spiritual path by helping to ground us in personal experience of non-separation from the natural world. The emphasis is not on meditative technique so much as developing direct awareness that can lead to a new integration of the internal (spiritual) and external (activity). There are no prerequisites for this retreat, and beginning meditators are welcome and will be fully supported.
